Giralte de Bruselas et al., The Main Retable at Oviedo Cathedral: Detail, the Flight into Egypt

1512-31
Cathedral of St. Savior, Oviedo, Spain

In this tight space the artist has omitted the boy who often leads the donkey in images of this type. Here we have only Mary in her usual blue mantle, Joseph with his staff, the child Jesus in swaddling clothes (Luke 2:7), and a minuscule angel adoring the child.

At the top of the gnarly tree on the left there appear to be some globed fruits, perhaps an allusion to the Palm Tree Miracle.
